Value of Time

“Life is a short period of time between birth and death.” – Alexander Moses

  • Why is time such as significant concept?

If you want to be successful and live a joyful and fulfilling life, you must understand the secret of life:

LIFE = TIME = OPPORTUNITY = SUCCESS

Time is the most precious gift we have. With that said, most of us ignore time as if we had an unlimited supply of it. As far as your life is concerned, you can either have a great time or you can waste time. In other words, you can either choose to enjoy the time you have or try to come up with a myriad of ways to kill time. Sadly, whenever you’re killing time, you are actually killing a portion of your life. This may sound a bit harsh, but the truth is that if you are not having the time of your life, you are committing slow suicide! If you do not want to comprehend the fact that you are going to die and are willing to change your life to begin enjoying every second of the time you have left, you might as well stop reading now.

Here is a sobering example: imagine you woke up with a sharp pain this morning. You went to the doctor, they ran a bunch of tests and determined that you have a stage 4 cancer with less than 30 days to live. What thoughts will be going through your head? What would you be doing for the next 30 days? (Please pause and write down how you feel and what you are going to do).

  • What is the true value of time?

We think of time in terms of years, months, weeks, days, hours, minutes and seconds. The secret to understanding the true value of time is realizing what it means to celebrate every moment of your precious life. In order to appreciate everything that life has to offer, you must learn how to treasure time to the fullest extent… because once it’s over, it’s really gone! No money in the world can ever buy back the time that you’ve lost or wasted. Remember, your life is built on precious moments and death is the only end result! The truth is, most people have no idea how to value their time. Even more baffling is the fact that the vast majority of people on this planet live like they will never die. Then, when they are about to die, they suddenly realize that they never lived… This is insanity!

  • How should I organize my time?

Even if you’re well organized, there is only a certain amount of time available in each day. Time cannot change. Even the most creative and successful people can waste enormous amounts of time, so it is important to pinpoint those areas that require improvement.

The truth is, during any given day you can only spend your time in the following 3 states:

  1. Feeling joy
  2. Feeling pain (pain can be so subtle, that you are not consciously aware of it)
  3. State of sleep (unconscious or trance-like state)

It is important to identify how much time you spend in each of the above states. The vast majority of people spend most of their time sleepwalking through life (State 3). What this means is that even in their normal “awake” state, they are not consciously present in any of their thoughts, emotions or actions and their lives basically run on autopilot. For many of our students, this is a stunning and sobering revelation. What’s even worse, during the short periods when people are truly conscious, they experience some level of pain. When asked about how many happy days he had in his entire life, Napoleon Bonaparte was only able to count 14. Most people in this world cannot even count that many and consider it “normal”! This sounds bad, but please understand that this seemingly desperate situation can be changed by altering your perception, which is one of the major benefits of working with us in one-on-one sessions.

  • What is the link between time and financial success?

Once again, time is the most valuable resource that you have, period. If you don’t believe this, just talk to someone who is dying of a terminal illness. They understand the true value of time more than anyone. Unfortunately, many people waste their entire lives without even thinking twice about it. Unconscious of the fact that “time is money”, they end up wasting their money as well.

  1. Very enciteful and really well read. Your post was so well written that I for once, shut down and thought about how I actually spend a lot of my time. I came to the realism that I do waste a huge amount of time and like you said, I can never get it back. I almost have to stop myself now before jumping from one thing to the next and think about if I am wasting my time with this project or is this going to really impact my life. Thank you for sharing your thoughts about how valuable time really is.

  2. I’ve read a lot of articles on the value of time. Yours is one of the few that establishes value in terms of opportunity and mindfulness, rather than just productivity. Mindfulness takes considerable practice, however. Have you written on how one can move from the sleep state to other feeling states? Thank you, love this post.

  3. Quite awakening.
Time is the most important abstract asset we all have and we only realise its importance when confronted with illness, injuries, a fall on hard times like losing one’s job or business, etc.
